Strech Marks Treatment
Stretchmarks appear as parallel streaks of red or purple, thinned, glossy skin that over time may become depressed and scar like in texture and sometimes white in color. Stretch Marks and Pregnancy Though the nine months of pregnancy are a wonderful time in a woman’s life, there are a host of undesirable changes that occur in the skin during this period. Some of these are due to hormonal influences and others are due to the mechanical changes in the body associated with pregnancy. Stretch Mark therapies There are plenty over-the-counter treatments for stretch mark, such as Strivectin. Unfortunately no topical remedies have been medically proven to improve the appearance of stretch marks. RetinA, glycolic acid, alphahydroxy acids have been prescribed with very little success. Dermabrasion or chemical peels have also been used. The results of these treatments range from fair to minimal. How does Laser Treatments Work? Current laser technology has been shown to improve or eliminate red or raised scars. The science of using lasers to remove stretch marks is that it stimulates the skin’s natural synthesis of collagen. Collagen is a protein rich compound occurring in the body that repairs and rejuvenates skin tissue. Cosmetic laser treatment for stretch marks works to stimulate renewed growth of depleted collagen. It removes damaged skin tissue, seals broken blood vessels and repairs the fibers of the middle skin. This helps to "fill in" the stretch marks. What lasers are used to treat stretch marks? At D&A various lasers are used to treat stretch marks. They include: VBeam, Fraxel and Portrait. VBEAM laser Vbeam is a pulsed dye laser that is used to treat the red color of the stretch marks. The procedure is comfortable and require no down time. Patients will feel a sensation of a rubber band snap combined with a cool burst of air. After the treatment, the skin will be red with some localized swelling that is typically gone by the next day. Treatments are done monthly. Vbeam may be combined with other lasers such as the Fraxel. FRAXEL laser The Fraxel laser is the most effective treatment for stretch marks available today. Using Fraxel, we can stimulate collagen and elastin synthesis while resurfacing about 20% of your skin’s surface with each treatment. After a series of FRAXEL treatments one will see improvement in the texture, diameter and depth of the stretch marks. If the stretch marks are red, the Vbeam laser should be used in combination with Fraxel. The Fraxel laser treatment requires a topical anesthetic beforehand. During the treatment, the hand piece is gently guided across the skin like an airbrush painting your skin with micro-treatments beneath the surface of your skin. Treatments normally take about 20-25 minutes. The redness that is noticed after treatment dissipates within a few days. No downtime is required when Fraxel is used on the skin of the body. |
